Retreat theme 2011-2012
Catch the Fire! Responding to God’s Touch.
One of the best-known works of Western art is that section of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, called "The Creation of Adam." It depicts Adam leaning on his elbow, while, somewhat languidly holding his arm out towards God. By contrast, God is reaching, straining to touch Adam’s fingertip to give him life, spiritual life.
That is the story of salvation history. It is the story of a God who never gives up reaching out to touch us. God wrestled with Jacob and called Moses from the Burning Bush. He touched Isaiah with burning coal and whispered to Elijah. God sent his Son. Jesus chose the Twelve. He healed lepers, drank water with a Samaritan woman, dined with sinners - society’s "untouchables." On the road to Damascus, the Lord touched Saul, who responded to God’s touch, caught the fire, and became Paul the Apostle. Those who respond to God’s touch are always transformed.
The story continues with you. From the cross, the Lord yearns to touch you, too, to touch your heart. He stretches to touch you from a place of stillness, at the depth of your soul. How will you respond? You are invited to come on retreat to catch the fire of God’s love. As with Adam, it begins with a touch.
