Listen to the sermons of the flowers, the trees, the bushes, the heavens, the sun, and all the world. You will find they preach of love and praise of God, and invite you to magnify the greatness of the Sovereign Artist, who gave them being. ~St. Paul of the Cross
The Passionist charism has traditionally called Passionist priests, brothers, sisters and lay persons to reach out with compassion to all who carry a cross in our contemporary world.
Today, with the ongoing surge of national and global consumerism leading to the depletion of the Earth’s resources and damage to her fragile ecosystem, the Passionist Community is responding to a suffering of a different sort. Members of the Passionist family, inspired by fellow Passionist and eco-justice pioneer, Fr. Thomas Berry, are coming together to address issues related to the suffering of the Earth itself.
Passionist Eco-Justice is born out of the belief that people of faith have a responsibility to assume an active role in building a just and sustainable society. For the Passionists, one avenue for addressing this issue can be found in our vow of poverty.
Religious communities like the Passionists have made the vow of poverty an integral part of who we are. The vow was not done for the sake of poverty itself. The application of poverty was a way of ensuring a community lifestyle of intense sharing and the promotion of the common good. It was also a way of disciplining our own consumption and use of resources.
However, there are many ways that each of us can participate in creating a sustainable society. For more information about Passionist efforts and how you can personally participate in eco-justice, visit:
