How Passionists Advocate

The Passionist Legislative Advocacy Project looks to promote and address issues of social concern through awareness of the legislative process of our own American government. We examine relevant issues with Catholic advocacy organizations such as NETWORK and Catholic Relief Services and then provide current information to our constituency via advocacy email alerts.

A delegation of the Passionist Community participates as a sponsor of the Ecumenical Advocacy Days (www.advocacydays.org) held in Washington, D.C. This year we will work with other religious communities on the theme of bringing about a world with Enough for all Creation. This theme will address the issue of poverty in the midst of the current economic crisis and in relation to social and environmental issues like migration and climate change.  The 2009 Conference will be held on March 13 through the 16. On March 16 we will lobby these policies with our larger religious family.

As a Catholic religious community the issue of alleviating poverty is one that is near to our heart and spirituality. Our own religious Constitution promotes the Catholic virtue of solidarity with the poor:

  • In a world where the unjust distribution of goods is a major source of division, hatred,
and suffering, we want our poverty to witness to the true value and purpose of these goods.
  • As far as possible we intend to share our life with others, and to use our possessions for the
relief of suffering and for the increase of justice and peace in the world.

                                                                                                                    Passionist Constitution #13

Throughout the year, the JPIC office continues to bring the issues raised at Ecumenical Advocacy Days to our congressional representatives and maintains a constituency-based relationship with them.

You can learn more about the three legislative issues that the Passionist Community is currently working on with our legislators by returning to the previous page or clicking below. We invite you to participate with us in addressing theses issues of social concern.
