The Good Earth
Fr. Phil Schaefer, CP

Doesn’t some masterpiece bear this title? We are all so involved with living that we may take the Earth for granted. Despite efforts to belittle our precious planet as a mere speck in the universe, it still stands out as quite unique! Gases hug the earth.  Are other heavenly bodies so privileged? Daily, it turns off the lights and then flicks them back on.

Earth provides us with variety - seasons are ever changing.  Its clouds float across the sky to block the scorching rays of the summer and entrap the heat in winter.  Oh yes, another service of clouds - they pick up water from the ocean to shed it elsewhere on the crops.  Earth’s breezes provide natural air conditioning.  It circles around that lucky ol’ sun along with the other planets, so it is never lonely.  Luckily that fireball has a string attached to Mother Earth so that it does not collide with other heavenly bodies.  One statistic Earth keeps hidden is its size - it is neither the largest nor the smallest of the sun’s planets.

Reflecting on our flying ball, shouldn’t we be thankful that the Lord God has provided for us so abundantly!
