Outside the large city of Bangalore in central southern India, the Passionists have founded a rehabilitation center where former prison inmates have a place to learn job skills and begin the delicate transition process back to their families and society.

Fr. Alphonse Justin Nelson is the new director of the rehabilitation center and will also serve as a chaplain at the nearby prison facility. Inmates who are ready for release and are interested in attending our program can apply for residency at Sneya Jyothi for a period of up to six months. During that time, access to job training is provided—farming or driving, for example—and Passionists work with the men and their families to repair the broken relationships that are often the result of incarceration.

For some of these men, the level of trust and care that they receive at our Passionist rehab center is a very new experience in their life, and can make the difference between living life as they had in the past or choosing a new path. Spirituality is nurtured at the center, and counseling is also provided to help rebuild self-esteem.
