“The Cross is a symbol of hope in moments of despair in our lives. The cross reminds me of an historical moment where God’s eternal love revealed itself in human history by turning a social device of death and fear into a symbol of eternal life and hope. God’s power is made quite obvious to me when I consider that a religious movement that started with a poor carpenter from Nazareth, who was crucified by one of the most powerful civilizations on earth, took over that civilization and continues to thrive up to our own time.

The Cross then becomes a symbol of hope amidst my own desperate moments. The various trials and challenges that I face, whether social, natural or personal, are transformed when I reflect that maybe, in the long run, some good will come out of this. I try to place myself in the footsteps of the disciples who must have despaired at the grotesque end of the one who they considered to be the Messiah. I reflect on how transformed they must have felt when they witnessed the resurrection. This then is where I place myself.”
