“The answer is in the question. Oftentimes when we allow ourselves to really reflect on the meaning of our lives, I think we may try to search for some lofty purpose or grand notion of what we are meant to accomplish outside the reality of our lives. But what we really need to do is find meaning in our own lives—that is, in our home and work and all the other small realities we encounter each day. Of course, I am not saying that we shouldn’t be on the look-out for some higher goals or aspirations. We may be called to do great things that the whole world will know about it. But we also may be called to be the best parent we can be, to make a difference in the few lives that we may touch each day, to love everyone as completely and unselfishly as we can. And in that sort of life, there is great meaning. I think that in searching for those goals-ordinary or extraordinary-you have to be open to hearing God’s voice. This isn’t easy to do with all the interference from the world. I don’t think we can find our “meaning” without a connection to God.”
