“Be an example of God’s love to others. There are, of course, many answers to this question. Priests and missionaries and aid-workers—these are the types of people who come to mind when I think about a life serving God. But for many of us, we have to find a way to serve God in our ordinary, day-to-day lives. The teacher and the writer and the engineer who go to work and raise their kids and sometimes miss Mass and watch too much TV—how are they going to serve God in the midst of their daily routine and mundane tasks?
I think this approach to our daily lives-to bring Christian virtue to all that we do—is one of the greatest ways to serve our Lord. Most of us have not been called to a religious life, we can’t leave our families and minister to the sick around the world. But service to God does not necessarily require anything remarkable. To always be an example of God’s love to others—that is serving God. In your work, at home, when you are at baseball game or at the grocery store—be kind, be charitable, be understanding, be patient, be a good friend. I think that kind of well-lived life is a great service to God.”
