“Remember our ultimate purpose. For me the opposite of gratitude is greed. The Greek for greed is ’pleonexia’ which means ’to want more.’ Today there is even a blood disease that is called by the same name. In this medical condition the blood, which supplies the body with oxygen, holds back the life giving oxygen, keeping it for itself…it always wants more. In a sense “pleonexia” makes the blood forget its original purpose which is to be a life-giving catalyst for the body.

In the same sense, the Passion of Jesus reminds us of our ultimate purpose before God. It is not to keep the fruit of His Passion for ourselves but rather to offer it to others as a life-giving catalyst leading ultimately to our and the world’s salvation and sanctification. That in essence is how we express our gratitude to God.”
