St. Gabriel Possenti, born Francesco Possenti, grew up in a well-educated and socially prominent family in central Italy. Though he was popular, intelligent and lively as a youth, he experienced personal loss and illness that deepened his spiritual awareness.

After a powerful encounter during a Marian procession, he felt called to religious life and joined the Passionist Congregation at age 18, taking the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. Known for his joyful spirit, humility and intense devotion to the Passion of Christ and to Mary, he lived his short religious life with great zeal. He died of tuberculosis before ordination, but his holiness left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Today, he is a model for young people striving for purity, purpose and faithfulness.
